Even today, when science has gained ground as a plausible method of explanation of facts, some of the day-to-day phenomena still are subject to magical and religious treatment. In rural India, we can easily find cases of such women who have been beaten to death because they were thought to be possessed by some evil spirit or devil.

Later on, the demonological approach to deviant behaviour was replaced by genetic factors. Attempts were made to associate deviant behaviour with inherited traits, body and mental types. It was claimed that certain body types were more prone to deviant behaviour than others.

Before Durkheim, it was generally regarded that deviance is an attribute, as something inherent in a certain kind of behaviour or person: the delinquent, the mentally ill, and so forth.

For earlier writers social pathology theorists like Cesare Lombroso, Charles Goring, Hans Eysenck and others, some individuals are psychologically or physically predisposed to deviant behaviour crime as a result of their biological inheritance.

But sociologists reject any emphasis on genetic roots of crime and deviance. For them deviance is best viewed, not as a type of person but rather as a formal property of social situations and social systems, i. Durkheim, in his works, raised two major but somewhat antagonistic issues about deviance. One is his focus on anomie, which is a state of normlessness and breakdown which emerges most conspicuously at times of rapid social change.

Durkheim had argued that deviance is likely to increase in circumstances of anomie, i. This concept suggests that deviant is not a special type of person but a product of certain kinds of social structure.

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis--that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside.

Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their grandchild the author would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward mobility.

But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that this is only the short, superficial version. Vance's grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother, struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, and were never able to fully escape the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America.

Vance piercingly shows how he himself still carries around the demons of their chaotic family history. A deeply moving memoir with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country. Vance presents a fascinating look into the culture that persists even today in the rural areas of Appalachia.

Poverty, distrust of outsiders, domestic violence and drug addictions all create stumbling blocks to success. These social issues have been carried with families who have moved out of the traditional geographic borders of Appalachia as these families migrated in search of better jobs. This should be required reading for educators and anyone who provides services to this population.

Vance presents heart-breaking family stories, but he also writes powerfully about the difference that personal intervention can make in the life of a child. It really explains a lot about Trump and how middle America feels about situations. Also the book was very well written.

The story just seemed to flow. I wonder, however, if the story will have the same impact if it is read 5 years from now when the whole "how could Trump have won" phenomena has passed. The wealthy and the powerful aren't just wealthy and powerful; they follow a different set of norms and mores. When you go from working-class to professional-class, almost everything about your old life becomes unfashionable at best or unhealthy at worst. At no time was this more obvious than the first and last time I took a Yale friend to Cracker Barrel. If you have no idea what I'm talking about I guess "breaking the norm" would be like taking a boom box into a library and blasting it.

We do not expect people to behave randomly but to behave in certain ways in particular situations. Such expectations can vary from group to group. One way in which these expectations become apparent is when we look at the roles that people play in society.
